MOMENT No. 006 is inspired by a real wildlife encounter at Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park & Preserve, where brown bears gathered along the river during the salmon run and an unforgettable struggle over a fish became part of the memory.

BROOKS CAMP

Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alaska

Wild river. Wild salmon. Two bears and one unforgettable moment.

There are places where wildlife feels distant.

Brooks Camp is not one of them.

In Katmai National Park & Preserve, the river, the salmon and the bears are all part of the same landscape.

During the salmon run, the water seems alive.

Salmon move upstream through the river while brown bears gather along the banks, waiting for an opportunity to catch them.

Some stand quietly in the water.

Others patrol the shoreline.

And every so often, the calm disappears.

On this particular day, our attention settled on two bears near the river.

A salmon had become the prize.

What followed was not the peaceful fishing scene we had been watching moments earlier.

The bears challenged one another over the fish.

Water splashed.

Mud shifted beneath them.

The salmon lay between two powerful animals, each unwilling to simply walk away.

For a few moments, everything else seemed to disappear.

It was raw, fast and completely unscripted — exactly the kind of encounter that reminds you that this landscape belongs to the wildlife first.

Then, almost as quickly as it began, the moment passed.

But the image of those two bears, the river and the salmon stayed with us.

That became our MOMENT.

WHEN THE RIVER BECAME A BATTLEGROUND

Most of the time, watching bears along Brooks River feels almost peaceful.

They wait.

They watch.

They move through the water searching for salmon.

But food changes the rhythm quickly.

One fish can suddenly become the focus of everything.

That was what happened when two bears found themselves competing over the same salmon.

The calm riverbank turned into a burst of movement.

Powerful bodies pushed through shallow water and wet mud while the fish remained between them.

There was nothing staged about it.

No predictable beginning.

No perfect ending.

Just a brief glimpse of the competition that exists naturally in a place where bears and salmon have shared the same river for generations.

It lasted only moments.

But sometimes the shortest encounters create the strongest memories.

FROM MEMORY TO ART

MOMENT No. 006 reimagines that Brooks Camp encounter as a vintage-inspired travel poster.

The river, muddy shoreline and forest establish the landscape of Katmai, while the salmon represents the natural cycle that brings the bears back to Brooks River year after year.

But the bears dominate the artwork.

Their movement is deliberately exaggerated just enough to capture the intensity of the encounter.

At the center is the moment we remembered most:

two brown bears competing over a wild salmon beside the river at Brooks Camp.

The artwork simplifies the landscape and concentrates the action into one scene, preserving the wildness and energy of the memory rather than trying to duplicate a photograph exactly.

It isn't meant to reproduce a photograph exactly.

It is meant to preserve how the moment felt.

The journey gave us Katmai.
The moment gave us the story.
