DRY TORTUGAS
National Park, Florida
A remote island. A sky full of stars. One unforgettable encounter at the edge of the sea.
Some places feel far away even before you arrive.
Dry Tortugas National Park is one of those places.
Surrounded by open water far from the mainland, the park feels almost completely removed from everyday life. There are no restaurants, no stores and none of the conveniences we normally expect when travelling.
If you plan to camp, you bring what you need with you — your equipment, your food and your water.
And that is part of what makes the place so unforgettable.
We travelled there as a family and camped on the island, surrounded by clear blue water, coral, tropical fish and the massive brick walls of Fort Jefferson.
During the day, the sea seemed to be everywhere.
The water was extraordinarily clear, and beneath the surface was another world of coral, fish and marine life. Boats and seaplanes came and went, but as the day faded, the island became quieter.
Then night arrived.
The sky over Dry Tortugas was completely different from the night sky we were used to seeing.
With so little artificial light around us, the stars seemed brighter, deeper and almost endless.
And then something unexpected happened near the water.
Two young fishermen had caught a large shark.
For the children watching nearby, seeing such a powerful animal so close was both surprising and unforgettable.
The shark was brought close enough for the hook to be dealt with, and after the brief encounter, it was returned to the sea.
Within moments, it disappeared back into the darkness.
Above us was the Milky Way.
Behind us stood Fort Jefferson.
And in front of us, the shark slipped back into the ocean.
That became our MOMENT.

A SHARK UNDER THE STARS
During the day, Dry Tortugas felt bright and open — blue water, coral, boats and the immense walls of Fort Jefferson.
At night, it became another place entirely.
The island grew quiet.
The sea turned dark.
And without the glow of a nearby city, the sky seemed to open above us.
That was the setting when the shark appeared.
What began as nighttime fishing suddenly became an encounter with one of the most powerful animals in the water.
For the children watching nearby, the scale of the shark was difficult to ignore.
For a few minutes, everyone focused on what was happening at the shoreline.
Then the hook was dealt with and the animal was returned to the sea.
The shark disappeared almost immediately.
But the image of that moment — the dark water, the people gathered beside it, the shark at the shoreline and the stars overhead — never really disappeared with it.
FROM MEMORY TO ART
MOMENT No. 003 reimagines that night at Dry Tortugas as a vintage-inspired travel poster.
Fort Jefferson anchors the artwork to the island itself, while the dark ocean and distant shoreline recreate the isolation that makes Dry Tortugas feel so different from most National Parks.
Above the scene, the Milky Way recalls the extraordinary night sky we experienced while camping far from the lights of the mainland.
And at the center is the moment we remembered most:
a large shark at the edge of the sea, surrounded by people beneath a sky filled with stars.
The artwork brings together different parts of the memory — the fort, the island, the night sky and the shark — into one image.
It isn't meant to reproduce a photograph exactly.
It is meant to preserve how the moment felt.
The journey gave us Dry Tortugas.
The moment gave us the story.
