WRANGELL–ST. ELIAS
National Park & Preserve, Alaska
Wild salmon. Wild rivers. A moment we never forgot.
Some travel memories begin with a famous landmark.
This one began beside a river in Alaska.
In Wrangell–St. Elias National Park & Preserve, we came across something we had never experienced before — a traditional Alaskan fish wheel turning slowly with the current.
Built beside the river, the wheel needed no motor. The flowing water kept it moving, lifting migrating salmon from the river as they travelled upstream. It was simple, ingenious, and completely connected to the landscape around it.
But what stayed with us was not only the fish wheel.
It was everything that happened around it.
The fishermen collected the salmon and transported the catch by ATV. The fish were processed right there while they were still fresh. Two beautiful fillets were carefully removed, along with the roe, while the remaining parts of the fish were returned to the river — becoming part of the natural cycle once again.
And then came one of those small, spontaneous moments that somehow became the part you remember most.
A fisherman lifted one of the wild salmon toward his face, almost as if he were about to take a bite.
It was funny, unexpected and completely natural.
That became our MOMENT.

Returning the Fish to the Alaskan River
Ten Years Later
Years passed, but we never forgot that river.
Almost ten years later, we returned hoping to find the same place again.
But Alaska had changed it.
The river had reshaped itself. Sandbars we remembered had been washed away, the water had moved, and the place we had once been able to walk across could no longer be reached in the same way.
The memory was still there.
The landscape was not.
And perhaps that is exactly why some moments matter so much.
Places change.
Rivers move.
People move on.
But for a few seconds, a photograph — and eventually a piece of art — can hold onto something that will never happen in exactly the same way again.

FROM MEMORY TO ART
MOMENT No. 001 reimagines that Alaska memory as a vintage-inspired travel poster.
The snow-covered mountains and forest place us back in Wrangell–St. Elias. The river and traditional fish wheel tell the story of salmon fishing in the Alaskan wilderness. The freshly cut salmon and roe recall what happened beside the river.
And at the center is the moment we remembered most:
a fisherman proudly holding a wild salmon, caught somewhere between adventure and laughter.
It isn't meant to reproduce a photograph exactly.
It is meant to preserve how the moment felt.
The journey gave us Alaska.
The moment gave us the story.
